So in order to welcome in the warm weather... Dusty got a grill!!!
Also, the music was excellent! The first band played an assortment of compositions, mostly originals with the exception of one Brad Shepik tune. For the most part the pieces seemed to exist more as motivations for improv through which the four musicians navigated quite musically. The sound was certainly that of a group of long lost friends who, having been reunited, had new things to share with and behold in each other.
Second set, Sons of Daughters, I have to say, its not every day a group rolls through sounding like a band, and how! These guys were fearsomely comfortable with each other and each others' music and the results were stunning. If you ever get a chance to hear them, or their new record "midwestnorthsoutheast"avaiable at http://patrickbreiner.bandcamp.com/ do it.
In september Mariel and Dustin began an exciting house music series. This blog will keep you up to date about who is performing at upcoming shows as well as reviews about past shows and hopefully ways to hear clips from the concerts.

April 23rd 8pm
Welcome to Midwood many new performers: Julie Kjaer, Adam Hopkins, Cody Brown, Patrick Briener, Devin Drobka and Aaron Darrell
Julie will be playing with Dustin Carlson- gtr, Mariel Berger accordion, Adam Hopkins bass. Julie is one of my absolute favorite alto sax players. Her comfortability when improvising is downright spiritual. Come and check her out before she heads back to Europe.
Paduco: Patrick Briener tenor sax, Dustin Carlson gtr, Cosy Feather Brown Drums. What can I say, this band is a mad house, the house might topple over, bring a helmet.
Sons of Daughters: This trio of brilliant young improvisers plays incendiary originals and reaches deep into the pantheon of jazz classics in order to deliver telepathy-laced shang-a-lang that transcends its geographical limitations. Patrick tenor, Devin Drobka- drums, Aaron Darrell bass.

March Show: Anicha and Sunshine Soldier
Anicha: Mariel Berger accordion, Sebastian Noelle guitar, Jean Rohe voice, Mark Small reeds.
Sunshine Soldier: Brad Henkel tpt, Dustin Carlson baritone gtr, Booker Stardrum drums and melodica.
Anicha started the night with a set of very beautiful music. The groups' compositions were lyrical, displaying notes of folkiness juxtaposed with odd meters and a few rock references from Sebastian's guitar.
Sunshine Soldier followed with a ruckus performance. Performing music that revolved around loose textural and melodic concepts. Brad Henkel's death scream balloon mouthpiece solo was definitely a high point for me.
